2 commercially-produced maintenance diets containing crude protein levels of 14-15 and 21% were offered to normal mice and normal and thymectomized rats for 48-52 weeks. Both sexes of 2 strains of mouse, CBA/Ca and BALB/c, and 2 strains of rat, Wistar males and Lister Hooded females, were used, starting at 8-10 weeks of age.
Results indicated that the diet containing 14-15% crude protein was an acceptable substitute for the 21% protein diet and could reduce the dietary cost by 30-40%.
